Overview
This IDC Retail Insights Perspective discusses traceability in grocery retail, which is becoming a major focus for a number of reasons, including improved food safety and reduced costs associated with recalls and spoilage. At the heart of the matter is the desire for grocers to strengthen their brand, which today includes an increasing amount of store-brand and private-label products. Brand strength correlates to consumer trust and loyalty, and grocers we surveyed identify customer loyalty as a key to business success in this competitive industry.
Consumers, industry initiatives, and government regulations are all driving grocers to implement various compliance efforts to increase food safety and deliver better products to the consumer. We touch on some of the main compliance initiatives surrounding food safety and traceability in the grocery supply chain. And we offer some guidance to grocery retailers about what standards and initiatives to consider and why they should be paying attention. We believe the current standards are the minimum requirements for grocers, and savvy retailers need to move beyond them to ensure brand loyalty and continued success.
