Overview
This IDC Retail Insights Perspective details the acquisition of the IBM Retail Store Solutions (RSS) business by Toshiba TEC. The document provides our analysis of the impact on the market, our guidance for retail buyers, and an interview with a senior IBM RSS executive.
On April 17, 2012, Toshiba announced that it had reached an agreement with IBM to acquire that company's Retail Store Solutions business unit, centered on IBM's long-standing point-of-sale (POS) product line. For $850 million, Toshiba will receive 80.1% of a new holding company that will be responsible for the IBM assets. Over time, the new company will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Toshiba. The transaction is expected to close as early as the second quarter of 2012.
